THE SCULPTURE:

This leviathan made from galvanised steel stands five and a half metres tall and breaches majestically from the grass beside the Apsley River.

In 2010, artist Alan Hubble created a life-size whale sculpture. His inspiration came about after seeing a news report about Japanese whalers hauling a whale and its calf out of the water.

The sculpture was donated to Walcha by the artist and is now permanently part of the Open Air Gallery.

Arguably Walcha's most photographed sculpture.

THE ARTIST:

Alan Hubble worked in collaboration with approximately 60 art students from across the state to put together the piece out of different types of metal - stainless and Colorbond .... and bowling balls for eyes!
