Lizzie Horne

With a practice including painting and sculpture, Lizzie Horne is predominantly a printmaker working in intaglio and relief. She was born in Tasmania and currently lives in the NSW university town of Armidale.

She has held two solo shows at the New England Regional Art Museum, as well as exhibiting in group exhibitions in galleries in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, including Carriageworks, Sydney, NERAM, the Brisbane Institute of Art, the Tanks Art Centre, Cairns and the Queenscliff Gallery & Workshop.

She has been shortlisted for many national art prizes, including the 2025 Australian Interior Art Prize, Muswellbrook Art Prize 2025, PLC Signature Art Prize 2024, Australian Monoprint Prize 2024, Wildlife Art Museum of Australia Works on Paper Prize 2023 (Award for Excellence), Peebles Print Prize, Inkmasters, the Swan Hill Drawing and Print Prize and the Stanthorpe Art Prize. She has also been short-listed for the Milburn Art Prize and has won the portrait section of the Armidale Art Prize. In 2017 she was the inaugural winner of the Helen Dangar Memorial Art Bursary administered by NERAM, and in 2026 has been announced as the inaugural winner of the New England Art Society artist bursary, which she will use to consolidate her painting skills.

Lizzie has taught printmaking around the region, as well as running workshops at NERAM and in her fully-equipped home studio in Armidale.

She is also a published children’s writer and author of Kangaroos in my blood and other poems (Douglas & Brown 2017) and holds a Bachelor of Languages. She has worked professionally as a journalist, copywriter and speechwriter. She has also acted professionally with the ABC, the National Theatre at the Playhouse, the Hole in the Wall Theatre, Griffin Theatre Company and the Tasmanian Theatre Company, and was a Cranston Cup Theatre Sports grand finalist at Belvoir Street Theatre in Sydney.

I am inspired by what I see around me, my family and the simple beauty of nature and the extraordinary landscape of the New England region. I am also interested in exploring complex ideas about what it means to be human, our relationships with each other and the natural world.

I am constantly seeking to refine and expand my practice with new techniques, mediums and ideas. Experimentation, chance and accidents play a significant role in this process of refinement, whereby any mistake that is repeatable can become a technique – if I understand how I did it I can use it again on purpose.

One way that I approach making is working en plein air in front of whatever subject I am drawing, making marks on a metal plate right there within the natural environment. I love the immediacy of these marks, which convey energy and mood rather than realistic accuracy. My series of Point Lookout landscapes entitled “The Edge (Wright country, New England National Park)” are an example of this creative process.

My studio practice is more deliberate, often involving research and repetition to allow me to develop ideas more deeply. I am currently heading in a more painterly direction, frequently employing sugar lift applied with a brush to a metal plate, and focusing on painting skills alongside my printmaking practice.
