Narrabri High Bangarra Excursion 2025

Report completed by Menzie Baker-Harvey and Zeiken Green-Murray. Senior members of the Junior AECG travelled to Sydney to see a preview performance of Bangarra Dance Theatre’s upcoming production, Illume.

On Tuesday morning, we visited the State Library of NSW to check out the exhibition The Country Cries for Truth, featuring artworks by Bundjalung artist Bronwyn Bancroft, who uses paint on old images to retell the histories of her country. Our senior JAECG members absolutely loved the art gallery as the paintings and pictures were very interesting and told many stories about Australia’s history throughout the many years it has been established. As said by many of the students, the art forms we saw were very interesting.

In the afternoon, we were the second group of people to see Bangarra’s show Illume. The dancers told many stories from Lombadina, in the Kimberley region, celebrating the red earth landscape and the pearl shell, significant to the people of that area. The dance showed true meaning as the performers’ dance was magnificent and amazing to witness firsthand with our very own eyes. It was so entertaining to see that Aboriginal culture is still being expressed and stories are being told through dances.
