Description
In 2025, BAMM engaged young people through two creative projects — Team Trampoline and Garage Barbershop — involving over 180 participants. Both projects combined hands-on workshops and culminated in an exhibition.
Building on the success of our 2025 youth engagement initiatives, BAMM has invited Kamilaroi artist, Mona Fernando, to create a new work of scale - Gomeroi Light. Gomeroi Light is an ambitious new project initiated and led by Mona, in collaboration with young people from the region.
Through a series of workshops, the young people will weave 100 lamp shades from lomandra gathered from the banks of the Mehi River. Together the individual lamp shades will form Gomeroi Light; a large-scale, illuminated installation to be exhibited as part of BAMM’s 2026 program.
Mona Fernando is a Gomeroi artist based in Moree, NSW. Her practice spans traditional and contemporary First Nations art forms, with a focus on weaving. She often works with locally sourced materials such as native grasses, rope, and natural dyes, creating pieces that reflect her connection to Country and cultural heritage.
Over the course of 10 weeks Mona will lead a series of workshops, onsite at BAMM, for young people from Moree East, St Philomena's and Moree Secondary College. After school workshops will also be offered for young people. BAMM’s Education and Engagement Officer, Cate Gaston, will work closely with Mona to support the young people, ensure cultural safety and create an inclusive environment that encourages creativity and confidence. The project will also employ an emerging Kamilaroi artist to support Mona and assist with the delivery of the workshops. This person will be engaged in dialogue with Mona.
