World-Class Violin Performance Strikes a Chord in Moree

Moree audiences embraced a rare opportunity to experience world-class classical music on Saturday, 8 August, with 45 people gathering at Social Co House for an intimate performance by internationally acclaimed Australian violinist Jonathon Glonek.

Supported by Arts North West and presented by the Bendoc Philharmonic, the concert was incredibly well supported by the local community, demonstrating the appetite for high-quality live performance in regional NSW.

The evening brought audiences remarkably close to an artist whose career has taken him across Australia, Europe, Asia and the United States. In the intimate surrounds of Social Co House, Glonek presented a virtuosic solo program featuring works by Bach, Paganini and Ysaÿe, alongside Scheherazade's Dreams by acclaimed Ukrainian composer Mikhail Shukh.

The performance of Shukh's work was particularly significant. Glonek first met the composer while performing in Kyiv with the Kyiv Festival Symphony in 2002, beginning a lasting friendship that eventually led Shukh to compose the technically demanding work specifically for him. Inspired by Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade, the composition offered the Moree audience an opportunity to hear a contemporary work with a deeply personal connection to the performer.

For Arts North West, the success of the evening was about much more than attendance numbers. The enthusiastic response from the 45 people who attended reflected the importance of creating opportunities for regional communities to experience exceptional artists in intimate and accessible settings.

Arts North West Executive Director Lauren Mackley said the community's support for the performance reinforced the value of investing in diverse cultural experiences across the region.

“It was wonderful to see the Moree community embrace this performance so warmly. An audience of 45 people in an intimate venue created a really special atmosphere and demonstrated that there is genuine enthusiasm for experiencing exceptional classical music here in our region.

“Regional communities deserve access to artists and performances of this calibre. These events enrich our cultural life, provide opportunities for people to experience something they may not otherwise encounter locally, and remind us that meaningful, world-class arts experiences don't have to be confined to metropolitan centres.”

The evening also demonstrated the important role that local organisations, venues and community supporters play in making regional touring possible. The strong support surrounding the concert helped transform a visiting performance into a genuine community cultural experience.

Glonek's visit forms part of a broader commitment to ensuring rural and regional audiences can experience some of Australia's finest musicians without having to travel to a major city. Making the concert free for people under 18 also helped ensure the opportunity was accessible to younger audiences and emerging musicians.

While 45 people may create an intimate audience by metropolitan concert-hall standards, in Moree that intimacy became one of the strengths of the evening. Audience members were able to experience extraordinary musicianship at close range and connect with both the music and the stories behind it. The success of the concert is also a reminder that regional arts programming thrives when communities get behind it. Moree's response showed that there is an audience for ambitious, diverse and high-quality cultural programming — and that bringing extraordinary artists into regional spaces can create memorable experiences for performers and audiences alike.
