Create The Curator

Arts North West successfully rolled out another impactful project aimed at fostering regional Aboriginal talent. The Create the Curator program served as a professional development initiative to support emerging regional Aboriginal curators in honing their skills and establishing themselves as curators in regional NSW.

Four regional Aboriginal emerging curators participated in this comprehensive three-part development program. The program equipped them with valuable skills, hands-on experience, and networking opportunities while providing significant insight into the diverse environments in which curators operate. Esteemed curators Sandra McMahon, Caroline Downer, and Sharni Jones worked closely with participants through workshops and site visits. These visits spanned a variety of creative spaces, including Aboriginal-owned and operated galleries, regional galleries, commercial spaces, and community venues across Armidale, Tamworth, and Moree.

The management of the project was entrusted to 2 Rivers Pty Ltd. Project Manager Lorrayne Riggs highlighted its importance, stating that it enabled experienced arts workers to transition into regional Aboriginal curatorship. This initiative not only advanced their professional skills but also fostered opportunities for regional Aboriginal artists. Riggs emphasized that the program emerged from extensive community consultation, addressing a critical gap in the market and aiming to drive long-term cultural, social, and economic benefits.

The curators applied their newfound skills in a practical context, culminating in a group-curated exhibition held in 2019 at Weswal Gallery in Tamworth. This exhibition marked a significant milestone for the participants, serving as a foundational step in building their professional portfolios.

The project successfully engaged and promoted regional Aboriginal artists, arts, and culture. By introducing more Aboriginal individuals to curatorial roles, it laid the groundwork for long-term collaborations and innovative exhibitions, enriching the cultural landscape of regional New South Wales and broadening audience engagement.
