Bioluminescence – Behind Every Window: A Story Told Through Light

Christmas in the Highlands | Glen Innes

Arts North West partnered with Bioluminescence, LM vs ML Consultancy and Glen Innes Severn Council to support the delivery of Behind Every Window: A Story Told Through Light, an immersive digital arts activation presented as part of the 2025 Christmas in the Highlands celebrations.

The project was delivered by the Bioluminescence team, led by Scott Baker and Isaac Lynnah, who facilitated an intensive three-day mentoring program introducing local young people to the creative and technical disciplines of digital projection mapping, audiovisual production and immersive public art. Arts North West and LM vs ML Consultancy worked collaboratively to coordinate local project delivery, stakeholder engagement, participant recruitment and on-the-ground logistics, ensuring the program was accessible to young people from across the Glen Innes region.

Over the course of the workshops, participants developed practical skills in digital storytelling, videography, video editing, projection mapping, event production and creative technology. Working alongside experienced practitioners, students explored the Glen Innes landscape through photography and video before transforming their footage into original projection artworks using professional software and industry-standard equipment. Participants also gained valuable experience in projection installation, site planning, risk management and live event operations, providing insight into career pathways within the creative industries.

The program culminated in a spectacular public projection event during Christmas in the Highlands, where participants assisted in installing and operating a series of large-scale digital projections throughout the Glen Innes CBD. Historic buildings and public spaces were transformed through light, animation and moving image, creating an immersive evening experience that celebrated both the natural environment and the creativity of local young people. The activation encouraged residents and visitors to experience the town centre in a new way while contributing to the vibrancy of the broader Christmas festivities.

The partnership demonstrated the value of bringing nationally recognised digital arts practitioners into regional communities to provide meaningful creative development opportunities for young people. Through mentorship, collaboration and hands-on learning, participants developed artistic, technical and vocational skills while contributing to a professionally presented public artwork.

Behind Every Window: A Story Told Through Light successfully showcased how contemporary digital arts can activate public spaces, strengthen community participation and inspire the next generation of regional creatives. The project left a lasting legacy of new skills, professional connections and increased confidence for participating young people, while reinforcing Glen Innes' reputation as a community that embraces innovation, creativity and cultural experiences.
