About
The Poet's Precinct - The Maas Walk and the Dorothea Mackellar Statue
Winding its way to the Dorothea Mackellar statue through a
beautiful garden of native plants, the Maas Walk features two of
Dorothea’s poems, “Dawn” and “Burning Off”. The walk was named in memory of the Dorothea Mackellar Memorial Society founder, Mikki Maas OAM. The society was founded in 1983.
The Dorothea Mackellar statue is located across the road from the Mackellar Centre and is a life-sized bronze monument acknowledging Dorothea Mackellar’s connection to the Gunnedah
district. Dorothea, astride a horse, is looking towards the distant
properties once owned by her family.
