Created by Peter Hooper, this sculpture stands as a dual tribute: to the role of the guitar in country music, and to the original series of guitar assemblages by the Spanish artist Pablo Picasso.

It is located in Bicentennial Park, adjacent to Tamworth’s main outdoor performance space by the banks of the Peel River, a place where the guitar is an integral part of many concerts held during Country Music Week and throughout the year.

In contrast to the original Picasso guitar assemblages, which are approximately 1 metre in height, this Picasso Guitar stands 6.3 metres high on a 6-metre underground pier. Its large scale forms a companion piece to the famous 12-metre-high Golden Guitar located outside the Visitors’ Information Centre in Tamworth. The original Picasso guitars were assembled from cardboard, with versions made subsequently – during the period 1912–14 – fashioned in metal. This Picasso Guitar was made from Corten steel in December 2016, from a concept by local artist Peter Hooper. It was assembled by B&G Fabrications of Tamworth.
