Isabelle Devos

Isabelle Devos is a contemporary painter whose work conveys a subtly powerful sense of place and atmosphere. Through her paintings, she delves into the hidden narratives that emerge from the spaces where people and the landscape intersect.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts majoring in Painting and Photography from Mount Allison University in Canada, she spent several years working as an artist on the east coast of Canada while raising her young family.

In 2004 Devos relocated with her family to regional Australia where she immediately fell in love with the local landscapes, with their combination of rural properties among national parks wilderness with spectacular waterfalls and gorges. Devos exhibits her work regularly in urban and regional galleries and is represented by galleries in Sydney and Brisbane as well as in Canada.

Devos’s work has been shortlisted for several major Australian art prizes such as the Hawkesbury Prize 2025, Fisher’s Ghost Art Award in 2024, the Glover Prize in 2023, the Lethbridge Landscape Prize in 2023, 2025 and the Paddington Art Prize in 2022.

Her work is part of the collection at the New South Wales State Library and New England Regional Art Museum in Australia as well as in the New Brunswick Art Bank collection in Canada.

Isabelle Devos is represented by galleries in Sydney, Brisbane and Canada and exhibits at New England Regional Art Museum, Weswal Gallery and Walcha Gallery.

“I am captivated by the abstract qualities found in landscapes, such as the curve of a hill, the diagonal path of a road, and the elongated shadow cast by a cluster of trees. My work explores the human connection to nature and our attempts to control and influence the environment.

I begin my process with preliminary drawings and studies in a variety of mediums, including pen, ink, pencil, and gouache. From the studies I begin working on the larger painting, letting it unfold organically as I layer and build upon the understructure.

The landscape is a dynamic and ephemeral subject, in a constant sense of flux. I bring attention to a specific moment of stillness, aiming to capture not only the physical features but also the intangible moods and memories that may linger and shape the present moment.”
