GATHER AND TRADE - ABORIGINAL ARTISANS MICRO MARKETS 2023

TOMORROW (SATURDAY, JUNE 3)
IS 'GATHER AND TRADE' IN NARRABRI!

This Saturday from 8.00 am to 1.30 pm Arts North West and Rotary Club of Narrabri are collaborating with Ethan Towns to deliver the Narrabri leg of 'Gather and Trade' First Nations Aboriginal Artisan Micro Market. This is part of the Rotary Club of Narrabri's biggest market of the year! Showcasing artists include Bradley Hatton, Amy Copelin, Ebonie Hatton, Pauline Sampson, Vivianne Smith, Ethan Towns and Tyler Stackman-Green.

Crn of Dangar Street, and Selina Street, Narrabri, NSW 2388.

On Sunday May 28, Arts North West had a great day at The Artshack in Wallabadah for our 'Gather and Trade - Aboriginal Artisan Micro Markets'

A huge thank you to Tania Hartigan and her family for hosting the event and to everyone who came along and supported our First Nations creatives.

There were lots of sales made, amazing lemon myrtle muffins, and fresh scones from the Giliyay Cafe and boomerang throwing lessons from Jack Conlan. Rod Hartigan was also kind enough to give us a guided tour of the grinding stones on the site. A huge thank you to The Artshack for the use of such an amazing venue.

FELTING HANDS OF THE MOREE PLAINS

Last week, Arts North West, Moree Plains Shire Council, Rural Adversity Mental Health Program - RAMHP and Joanne Barr delivered Stage 1 of the wet-felt hatmaking workshops in Mungindi and Boomi.  The days were filled with laughter, colour, creativity, and reconnection. All our wonderful participants walked away with a fantastic felted hat and some new friends. This project has been made possible with funding from the Boosting Rural Resistance Program and Create NSW.

This coming week Stage 2 of Felting Hands of The Moree Plains will visit the communities of Garah and Pallamallawa with two workshops being held in local community halls. Both workshops are fully booked and we look forward to seeing another batch of felt hats created.

Arts North West, RAMHP and Moree Plains Shire Council are collaborating with Joanne Barr to bring "Felting Hands of The Moree Plains", a series of felt hat-making workshops taking place in the community halls of Mungindi, Boomi, Pallamallawa, and Garah. These workshops offer participants the opportunity to learn various felting techniques while fostering connections, conversations, and mental health check-ins. These wet-felt hat-making workshops aim to boost resilience in regional and remote communities. Letitia Cross, the Rural Adversity Mental Health Program Coordinator, will be present at all workshops, providing informal support and acting as a point of contact for health and wellbeing resources. All the hats made will be photographed and showcased on the ANW website. This project is made possible thanks to the funding received from the Boosting Rural Resistance Program and Create NSW.

Arts North West is proud to have supported 10 local First Nations artists in this program. 'Here Now & Always' is an initiative by the Aboriginal Regional Arts Alliance that aims to celebrate and showcase Aboriginal arts and culture from New South Wales on a global scale. This annual program includes an online festival program and art market, providing a digital platform where presenters, artists, and audiences can unite in their appreciation of Aboriginal art and culture. The initiative not only fosters education but also cultivates meaningful partnerships. It serves as a profound reminder and renewal of the profound connection between Aboriginal artistry and Country, where tradition intertwines with innovation. 'Here Now and Always' is dedicated to nurturing emerging artists while paying homage to those who have come before, acknowledging the enduring legacy of generations of Aboriginal people whose culture and spirit form the bedrock of this project.

This initiative is supported by Create NSW Regional Arts NSW and organized by the Aboriginal Regional Arts Alliance.

Regional Futures
Exhibition and Symposium

Regional Futures is a thought-provoking initiative that brings together artists from various regions in New South Wales. Tasked with envisioning the future of their respective regions, these artists have been commissioned to create works that explore this theme. Through their art, artists aim to spark a dialogue about the current challenges, transformations, and opportunities faced by regional communities. The culmination of this creative endeavour is the exhibition "Artists in Volatile Landscapes" at the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre, running from June 24 to September 24. The exhibition's official launch will take place on July 21, 2023, accompanied by an artist-led Symposium on July 22. As part of the event, Arts North West is supporting the inclusion of four local artists: Joanne Stead, Alana Blackburn, Tania Hartigan, and Mike Terry. Each artist has produced compelling responsive artworks that offer unique perspectives on the future of their respective regions. ANW extends the open invitation for you to attend the Exhibition and Symposium in June/July.

Arts North West ON TOUR

Arts North West ON TOUR is proud to present Melbourne International Comedy Festival - Australia’s ultimate comedy road trip!

Australia’s biggest comedy festival is hitting the road for a huge 25th year! Featuring the best and brightest of the 2023 Melbourne International Comedy Festival in a jam-packed show that’s sure to leave the whole nation laughing. Book now for a much-needed comedy fix when the Roadshow hits a stage near you!

Arts North West, Northern Inland Community College, community organisations and local government bodies are working together to increase opportunities for artists to teach their practice in our regions & opportunities for communities to gain access to workshops and classes.

Artists who are interested to share their knowledge and host workshops are invited to complete the Expressions of Interest form below. We ask that one submission is completed per workshop topic. You can make numerous submissions if you deliver more than one workshop topic.  

NEW EOI: A LETTER TO MY RETURNING

As briefly mention above, ANW is launching our newest initiative this Saturday, 3 June at the Safety Sausage Sizzle in Gunnedah.

‘A Letter to My Returning…’ is a creative recovery response project; aiming to work with flood-effected individuals from the local government areas of Gunnedah Shire Council, Narrabri Shire Council, Moree Plains Shire Council, and Tamworth Regional Council. This initiative aims to provide a platform for individuals who experienced continuous flooding in 2021/2022 to express their emotions towards the devastating flood waters that inundated their homes.

Through the power of letter writing, participants are encouraged to address their feelings directly to the flood waters. This process allows them to work through their emotions, providing a sense of release and healing. By sharing their thoughts, fears, and hopes, individuals can find solace and come to terms with the impact of the floods on their lives.

The letters will be part of a larger creative and collaborative process, that will engage ten artists from flood-affected communities to create artworks that draw inspiration from the letters as well as their own experiences and interpretations of the flood events and the effects on homes, livelihoods, and the landscape.

The artworks and the letters will be curated and on public exhibition as part of a touring show over three community galleries in the Gunnedah, Narrabri, Tamworth, and Moree Local Government areas, to be confirmed.

This project has been made possible by the Foundation for Rural Regional Renewal through FRRR.

Australia Council of the Arts Fellowships
Australia Council Fellowships of $80,000 support outstanding, established artists’ and arts workers’ activity and professional development for a period of one to two years.There are nine Fellowships offered in the areas of: Arts and Disability; Community Arts and Cultural Development; Dance; Emerging and Experimental Arts; First Nations; Literature; Music; Theatre; Visual Arts.If you are successful, the payments will be made in two tranches: $75,000 on acceptance of the funding contract, and $5,000 on acquittal.

Performing Lines new training program for emerging Producers
Performing Lines is bringing its innovative skills development program for up-and-coming Producers to NSW for a series of sessions designed to answer questions and provide real-world content to develop your skills and experience.  

The NSW Producers’ Platform provides an opportunity for 8 independent producers to undertake a rigorous skills development program spanning 10-weeks.

Hazelhurst Art on Paper Award
The biennial Hazelhurst Art on Paper Award is a significant national exhibition that aims to elevate the status of work on paper while supporting and promoting artists working with this medium. With awards totalling $26,000 the biennial Hazelhurst Art on Paper Award showcases outstanding art created with, on or about paper. Awards include the $15,000 major award, the $5,000 Young and Early Career Artist Award, the $5,000 Friends of Hazelhurst Local Artist Award, and the $1,000 People's Choice Award.

Digital Originals is a joint initiative of Screen Australia, SBS and NITV, aimed at developing exciting and innovative online scripted series for SBS and NITV platforms. The successful teams will attend a workshop focusing on short form narrative writing skills, and developing the projects to align with the SBS Charter and SBS OnDemand platform, culminating in a pitch to Screen Australia, SBS and NITV.
