WELCOME TO THE ARTS NORTH WEST NEWSFLASH

On Friday 21 April 2023 Arts North West and Tamworth Regional Council delivered the 'City of Lights - Next Gen' event in the Fitzroy Street Plaza, Tamworth. The night was a terrific success, with over 500 people in attendance throughout the night, 8 new artworks were produced, two community workshops with over 100 people participating and over 25 people working in the creative industry were employed throughout the delivery of the event.

Congratulations to artists Daniel Stanley, Jayden Sampson-Waters, Ruben Mellor, Jayden Kitchener, Miranda Heckenberg and the students from the Tamworth Art Academy and Tamworth Regional Gallery Art After-hours class, who saw their artworks and animations projected onto the buildings in the plaza.

Lenny Waters provided a very moving Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony, while Goldheist and Jane Stewart provided the soundscape for the event. Thank you to everyone who attended and helped us bring vibrancy and creativity into the Tamworth CBD. Together we transformed the urban streetscape for a night of fun, light and laughter.

GATHER AND TRADE – GLEN INNES THIS SATURDAY 6 MAY
This weekend Arts North West, Glen Innes Local Aboriginal Land Council and Quindalup - Aboriginal Art & Cultural Practices will be delivering the first leg of our ‘2023 Gather and Trade – Aboriginal Artisan Micro Markets’ in Glen Innes. The event will showcase a uniquely local array of  First Nations artists, craftspeople, cultural artisans works and creations, which will all be available for purchase on the day. This is a great opportunity for us to celebrate our local Aboriginal creatives.

Glen Innes Gather and Trade will be held from 1.00 pm – 4.00 pm on Saturday 6 May 2023 at Cooramah Cultural Centre 8 MacKenzie St, Glen Innes NSW 2370, and is open for everyone to come and be part of the day.

SKYWHALE - SKYWHALES: EVERY HEART SINGS

FREE PUBLIC CONSULTATION EVENT

Arts North West and Tamworth Regional Council are teaming up to better understand the local community’s wants and needs surrounding the arts and public art programming in the New England North West.

The Arts North West team will be at the Tamworth flight of Skywhales: Every Heart Sings on Saturday 6 May from 5 am. The consultation aims to collect the crowd’s thoughts and opinions about arts and public art programming in the Tamworth Regional Council LGA.

Following the Skywhales’ launch, Arts North West will be holding a Life Drawing workshop in Bicentennial Park from 7.00am - 9.30am with local artists Sophie Honess and Daniel Stanley. This free workshop is designed to encourage people – young and old – to get creative and capture the scene of the activation with drawing techniques.

FELTING HANDS ON THE MOREE PLAINS

“Felting Hands of The Moree Plains” is a series of felt hat making workshop with Joanne Barr, delivered in the community halls of Mungindi, Boomi, Pallamallawa and Garah. These workshops will provide an opportunity for participants to learn a range of felt-making techniques and will be inspired by gathering and chatting, reconnecting, and checking in with their mental health.  

Rural Adversity Mental Health Program Coordinator Letitia Cross will attend all workshops to provide informal support and a point of contact for information and resources on health and wellbeing. 

In one day, participants will start with felt and go home with newly created hat, new friends and reinvigorated connections in their community. All the wonderful hats will be photographed and included on the ANW website.

BAMM Unveiling of the Diabetes Awareness Tree!

BAMM and the Diabetes Alliance program (DAP+) have brought art and health together by partnering to create the Diabetes Awareness Tree. The tree is a tribute to all those in our community who suffer from diabetes, as well as those who care for them, to raise awareness and understand more about the prevention and treatment of diabetes.

The tree was strategically chosen to be on hospital grounds and accessible to patients. The Diabetes Awareness is on the Moree Hospital grounds to provide a peaceful and beautiful space where the community can enjoy disconnecting whilst sitting beneath the tree. It was wonderful to see all the knitted and crocheted items that traveled hundreds of kilometres to support the DAP+ tree.

We have some exciting things underway for the Yarn Bombing Project and we would love you to be involved! The Diabetes Alliance Plus Program reached out to BAMM and the Yarn Bombing Project to create a yarn bomb to raise awareness for Diabetes. It was very exciting to see that the project reached as far as Newcastle!

Prior to the yarn bomb installation a pop up yarning session was hosted in the BAMM Garden to raise awareness and understand more about the prevention and treatment of diabetes. During the event participants shared and learnt new stitches, techniques and patterns, enjoyed a picnic in the garden, met people with a shared interest and of course had a yarn about raising Diabetes awareness! It was great to see such a diverse range of people contribute to this yarn bomb and create a positive impact for Moree.

NEW EXHIBITION AT NERAM

James White: Blooming Marvellous
Opens May 5 - June 18, 2023 - New England Regional Art Gallery

This collection of paintings celebrates James White’s love of flowers and cut blooms while opening a broader dialogue around personal interaction with garden flowers. Mr. White has held solo exhibitions of watercolours at NERAM previously (in 1998, 2004, 2008, & 2010) and has also solo exhibited at Weswal Gallery in Tamworth, the BAMM, Narrabri Art Gallery and Gallery 126 in Armidale.

The Blooming Marvellous exhibition will open 6 pm Friday May 5.
Mr. White will be presenting an artist talk from 10.30 am on Saturday May 6.

Arts North West, Northern Inland Community College, community organisations and local government bodies are working together to increase opportunities for artists to teach their practice in our regions and opportunities for communities to gain access to workshops and classes.
Artists who are willing and interested to share their knowledge and host workshops are invited to complete the Expressions of Interest form below. We ask that one submission is completed per workshop topic.  You can make numerous submissions if you deliver more than one workshop topic.

Arts North West is seeking an Expression of Interest (EOI) to create our inaugural Arts North West Enable Arts Steering Committee. The aim of the Arts North West Enable Arts Steering Committee is to provide strategic direction, consultation, and advice to Arts North West when designing and delivering projects and programs, determining priority areas and accessible and inclusive considerations to our service delivery and the organisation as a whole.

The Stronger Communities Programme (SCP) provides grants of between $2,500 and $20,000 to community organisations and local governments for small capital projects that deliver social benefits for local communities.

FRRR – In a Good Place Program
This program aims to provide support for community-driven initiatives that reduce social isolation, increase social participation and connectedness, and increase help-seeking of members within rural, regional and remote communities who are at risk of, or are experiencing, mental health issues. Grants of up to $20,000 are available. A total funding pool of $250,000 is available. The application is a two-stage process.

Destination NSW – Nature-Based Visitor Experience Development Grants
This program aims to support the development of new and enhanced nature-based tourism attractions and experiences in regional NSW.
Grants between $100,000 and $250,000 (excluding GST) are available on a dollar-for-dollar matched funding basis. Will consider outperforming arcDUG status. Projects can be of a much greater value; however, all additional costs will need to be covered by the applicant.

Arts and Cultural Assets Program (ECAP Arts)
Recovery package for flood damaged arts and cultural infrastructure, delivered under the 2022 Community Local Infrastructure Recovery Package (CLIRP). Arts and cultural organisations, Local Councils and Regional Arts Development Organisations (RADOs) in areas impacted by the 2022 severe flood events* can now apply for funding to support the restoration, replacement and betterment of arts and cultural infrastructure that was damaged by flooding February and June 2022.

Strengthening Rural Communities — Small & Vital
The Strengthening Rural Communities (SRC) Small & Vital stream gives small remote, rural and regional communities across Australia the opportunity to access funds for a broad range of initiatives that directly and clearly benefit local communities. Grants up to $10,000 are available for a broad range of grassroots, community-led initiatives that directly and clearly benefit local communities that strengthen local people, places and climate solutions, with a preference for smaller communities (populations under 15,000).

Strengthening Rural Communities – Prepare & Recover
The Strengthening Rural Communities (SRC) Prepare & Recover program supports communities in remote, rural and regional communities across Australia to implement initiatives that prevent and prepare for future climate related impacts, or recover from existing disasters in the medium to long-term timeframe, generally one to ten years after the disaster. Grants up to $25,000 are available for a broad range of initiatives to strengthen the capacity and capability of local people, organisations, networks, and systems that help communities to be informed, skilled, connected and resourced for the future.

The Damien Greer Lawyers Community Grant program recognises and celebrates organisations that strive to make a positive impact within their local community. If your organisation is eligible, you can apply for a Community Grant of $2,500. There are 2 grants available in the second round, ending June 30, 2023.

Hazelhurst Art on Paper Award
The biennial Hazelhurst Art on Paper Award is a significant national exhibition that aims to elevate the status of work on paper while supporting and promoting artists working with this medium. With awards totalling $26,000 the biennial Hazelhurst Art on Paper Award showcases outstanding art created with, on or about paper. Awards include the $15,000 major award, the $5,000 Young and Early Career Artist Award, the $5,000 Friends of Hazelhurst Local Artist Award, and the $1,000 People's Choice Award.
