ARTS NORTH WEST IN THE CITY
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SESSIONS

Arts North West is back! After a few days away in Sydney the ANW team has returned to the NENW and is back to work. Thank you for your patience as we catch up on any calls or emails that may have been missed last week. The following is a bit of a recap:

On Wednesday 19 July, the Arts North West team headed to Sydney to join the other 14 Regional Arts Development Organisations from around the state for Professional Development sessions with Regional Arts NSW at The Rocks, Sydney. The 2 days of Professionals Development gave everyone from the RADO network a chance to meet and engage in discussions and celebrate regional arts communities. As a group, we then attended a showing of Forgetting Tim Minchin at the Belvoir Street Theatre and saw the sights of the city. Arts North West would like to thank Regional Arts NSW for providing a space and facilitating the Professional Development sessions.

ARTISTS IN VOLATILE LANDSCAPES
EXHIBITION OPENING
CASULA POWERHOUSE ARTS CENTRE

On Friday 21 July, ANW celebrated the official opening of Regional Futures Artists in Volatile Landscapes at Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre, Casula.  

Arts North West have been supporting regional artists Tania Hartigan, Joanne Stead, Dr Alana Blackburn and Mike Terry through 2 years of research, preparation and artwork development as part of the joint strategic project by the Regional Arts Network.

Arts North West would like to congratulate and thank the artists for their dedication to the project. If you would like to visit the Artists in Volatile Landscapes Regional Futures Exhibition at the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre, it will be on display from now until September 24, 2023.

REGIONAL FUTURES SYMPOSIUM

On Saturday 22 July, the Arts North West team were part of the inspiring and evocative event, the ‘Regional Futures Symposium’ at the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre. With a Keynote address from Dr Lindy Hume OAM, numerous panels, roundtable discussions and more. The Regional Futures Symposium created space for all sects of the arts industry to come together and share ideas about our changing world and the imperative role of regional areas now and into the future. Together we explored key topics including Interdisciplinary collaborations, Culture and Restoration in the face of resistance, Creating wellbeing and a sense of belonging through community engagement, listening better and walking softer with the natural world and recognising boundaries and interdependencies of the regional and city divide.

During the Symposium, NENW artist Tania Hartigan led a papermaking and weaving workshop as part of the ‘Busy Hands Talking’ extended session. During the workshop, attendees were able to experiment with weaving and papermaking with natural fibres. Even after this creative development session had ended, attendees were seen throughout the gallery in other sessions still weaving, a sign of a successful and engaging workshop.

The event was a wonderful success and a wonderful opportunity to have meaningful conversations and connections. Arts North West is very proud to be part of such an incredible showcase of the strengths of Regional NSW.

A NEW LOOK AT CULTURE - TOWN HALL FORUM TAMWORTH

The NSW Government is working towards the State’s first Arts, Culture & Creative Industries Policy, and they need the community’s feedback. We want to hear from you – the practitioners and audiences, in person and online. NSW needs an inclusive, sustainable and ambitious approach to arts and culture. The creative industries in NSW are vitally important to the NSW economy. And the Federal Government’s National Cultural Policy, Revive, provides an ideal starting point for NSW.

Arts North West and Create NSW invite you to join us on Tuesday, 15 August 2023 at 12:00 PM at the Tamworth Community Centre 3A Darling Street Tamworth. This forum is one in a series of in-person town hall meetings that are being held in metropolitan and regional areas around the state. During this forum, you can engage in discussions with industry experts and the Create NSW team.

This is your opportunity to ask important questions, raise your concerns and contribute to shaping the new arts, culture and creative industries policy for NSW.

BRANDING + MARKETING FOR REGIONAL CREATIVES

Arts North West and Taylah Maree, a Gunnedah-based creative business coach and photographer, are delivering a series of professional development group mentor workshops focusing on developing branding and marketing that speaks to our regional identity.

A LITTLE BIT OF BLUE

The story begins with strange disappearances from Mrs Mavis Hooley’s home. Something’s gone missing again. It’s nowhere to be found. Mrs Hooley has been looking everywhere. But it’s not just today. Every day a new thing seems to disappear. Little things. A $10 note. Clothes pegs. A ball of wool. It’s troubling at first, but then the thief takes it one step too far.
Mavis calls in a Detective to investigate. They set a trap for the burglar. A stakeout is required. In the dead of night, and the Detective indeed finds something peculiar…

Little Wing Puppets present their interactive environmental detective story A Little Bit of Blue. As well as unravelling a mystery, it involves learning about the unique habits of an extraordinary Australian creature, the bowerbird, and their fascination with the colour blue.

'A LETTER TO MY RETURNING...'
GIVING A VOICE TO FLOOD-AFFECTED REGIONS

‘A Letter to My Returning…’ is a creative recovery response project; aiming to work with flood-effected individuals, community groups and organisations from the local government areas of Gunnedah, Narrabri, Moree and Tamworth.

Through the power of letter writing, participants are encouraged to address a letter directly to the flood waters. This process provides space to express and process the flood events of 2021/2022.

Arts North West is still seeking expressions of interest from ten local artists, hobbyists, creatives and/or historians from flood-affected communities to create artworks and in part, creative documentation that reflect on the flood events that affected the region.

These artworks will draw inspiration from the letters, as well as the artists’ own experiences and interpretations of the flood events and their effects on homes, livelihoods, and the landscape. The letters and artworks will be curated as part of a touring exhibition.

Applications and submissions close at the end of October, 2023.

This project has been made possible by the Foundation for Rural Regional Renewal through FRRR.

CURRENT GRANT FUNDING

1 August - Australia Council of the Arts -Arts Projects for Organisations

This program funds a range of activities that deliver benefits to the arts sector and wider public, including national and international audiences and communities. Organisations that undertake arts programs, projects, or that provide services to artists, are welcome to apply. Organisations can propose a single project, a suite of projects or annual programs of activity. Grants are available from $20,000 to $100,000. Supported activities must last no longer than two years from the proposed start date.

14 August - Regional Arts Fund – Project Grants

The Project Grants will fund high-quality arts projects benefitting regional or remote artists, arts workers, audiences and communities. The focus of the project could include any area of creative practice, multiple art forms or cross-disciplinary practice. Up to $30,000

21 August - Arts and Cultural Funding Program - Annual Funding for Organisations - 2023-24 Round 1

Upto $200,000.00 Annual funding for arts and cultural organisations including local government authorities supports innovation, vibrancy and creativity within the NSW arts and cultural sector.

21 August - Arts and Cultural Funding Program - Creative Koori Projects - Individuals and Organisations - 2023-24 Round 1

Up to $60,000.00 in funding for Aboriginal individuals, groups and organisations (2023/24) supports innovation, vibrancy and creativity within the NSW arts and cultural sector.

21 August - Arts and Cultural Funding Program - Project Funding - Individuals and Groups - 2023-24 Round 1
Up to $60,000 to support innovative, accessible NSW arts and culture, and the employment and development of professional artists and cultural workers.

21 August - Arts and Cultural Funding Program - Project Funding for Organisations - 2023-34 - Round 1
Up to $60,000.00 in funding for organisations and local government authority projects to support innovation, vibrancy and creativity within the NSW arts and cultural sector.

10 September - Volunteer Museum Grant Program - Project Development Grants - 2023

Project Development Grants empower community museums and Aboriginal cultural spaces to carry out strategic and innovative projects with mid to long term outcomes. The grants can also provide an opportunity to work productively with an appropriate consultant as a skill development opportunity.

10 September - Volunteer Museum Grant Program - Small Grants - 2023

This program’s Small Grants aim to meet the short-term, collection-based requirements of community museums and Aboriginal cultural spaces. There are no set categories for funding and applications for a broad range of projects will be considered.
