WELCOME TO THE ARTS NORTH WEST NEWSFLASH

Last week, Arts North West accompanied Reflections mentor Suzie Wicks and mentee Shae Duncan to Boggabilla to film and record the Euraba Papermakers at the Paper Mill. The day was a tremendous success with around 100 people touring the mill, taking part in papermaking, and purchasing items from the Papermill shop. Father Paul West the main contact to the Euraba group said he and the ladies were overwhelmed by the support received on the day and for the amazing opportunity in the hope for the Euraba Papermakers to restart and sustain their small business. The Bank Art Museum staff Tania, Sarah and Julia facilitated the day providing a great atmosphere of entertainment with the local school children singing in Gomeroi language, social inclusion, and a delicious lunch.

Recently, Arts North West and Outback Arts took participants from our First Nations Intensive Curatorial Program - 'In our Hands' to the Art Gallery of NSW to meet with Wiradyuri and Kamilaroi artist, the world famous Jonathan Jones and Art Gallery of NSW’s Senior Curator of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Cara Pinchbeck, who designed a tour of contemporary First Nations art focusing on designing a powerful narrative through the composition of space.  

We then spent almost 2 days with the amazingly generous team from The Australia Museum who shared information and knowledge about preservation, collections and restoration, curating collections with artefacts, maintaining knowledge and voice within institutions and shared the process of developing their latest exhibition 'Meet Barka: The Forgotten River' in this new First Nations exhibition developed by Uncle Badger Bates and Justine Muller with the Barkandji community as well as the installation process and thematics behind 'Bayala Nura: Yarning Country' and the learning centre of 'Burra'.  

We are incredibly grateful to Laura McBride and her amazing team of curators, researchers and staff, for welcoming us behind the scenes of the Australia Museum, for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!  

This has been made possible by funds from the Australian Government through the Indigenous Languages and Arts Program. 

In our last edition of the ANW Newsflash, we hinted that there is a new project happening! Arts North West is excited to collaborate with Tamworth Regional Council and local artists Daniel Stanley and Kayleb Waters-Sampson to deliver a great night of light and activation in the Fitzroy Street Plaza through a free community event, ‘City of Light – Next Gen’. 

From 7.00pm on Friday the 21 April,  Fitzroy Street Plaza will be aglow with all things illuminated including projections on buildings, glowing fairy gardens and interactive LED and blue light activities for the whole family!  The night will feature large scale animation artworks over three sites from Tamworth-based animation artist Daniel Stanley as well as animated artworks from Gomeroi artist Kayleb Sampson-Waters.  There will also be a community stop motion animation projection from students from the Tamworth Regional Council After School Art Classes and Tamworth Art Academy workshops accompanied by a projected collection of images sourced from the Tamworth Film and Sound Archive.   

This event will see Fitzroy Street Plaza transformed for the community to be illuminated by possibility and explore their renewed urban environment and reinvigorated space.  This project funding was secured by Tamworth Regional Council through the NSW Government Department of Planning, Industry and Environment ‘Streets as Shared Spaces’ initiative. 

EOI: Arts North West are hosting a series of ‘Gather and Trade’ Aboriginal artisan micro market days throughout the New England North West during May and June of 2023. ANW is inviting First Nations artists, craftspeople, cultural artisans to submit an expression of interest to have a stall and be part of each event. This is a great opportunity for local Aboriginal creatives to sell their art and products and reach a wide audience to promote their goods and practices.

The dates and locations are as follows:

• 1.00pm – 4.00pm in Glen Innes on Saturday 6 May, 2023 at Coomarah Cultural Centre, 8 MacKenzie St, Glen Innes NSW 2370

• 9.00am – 1.00pm in Wallabadah on Sunday 28 May, 2023 at Art Shack @ Wilgabah, 107 Baldocks Rd, Wallabadah NSW 2343

• 8.00am – 1.30pm in Narrabri for the Shine Markets on Saturday 3 June, 2023 at The Narrabri Rotary Markets, Crn of Dangar Street and Selina Street, Narrabri, NSW 2388

• 9.00am – 1.00pm in Tenterfield on Sunday 18 June, 2023 at Gunimaa Nursery, 34 Railway Ave, Tenterfield, NSW 2372

The expressions of interest will close two weeks prior to each market event and each stall holder requires Public Liability insurance. Each stall holder is paid $200 to attend each event, to cover travel, accommodation and other expenses.

EOI: Arts North West, Northern Inland Community College, community organisations and local government bodies are working together to increase opportunities for artists to teach their practice in our regions and opportunities for communities to gain access to workshops and classes.
Artists who are willing and interested to share their knowledge and host workshops are invited to complete the Expressions of Interest form below. We ask that one submission is completed per workshop topic.  You can make numerous submissions if you deliver more than one workshop topic.

Experimenta Life Forms
April 1 - May 28 2023 - New England Regional Art Gallery

Experimenta Life Forms reveals how contemporary artists are exploring notions of life, at a time when technological change and new research findings are making definitions of ‘life’ increasingly difficult to pin down. The exhibition features a diversity of artforms including robotics, bio-art, screen-based works, installations, participatory and generative art. It showcases 20 artworks by 26 leading Australian and international artists who are making a significant contribution to current dialogues about the changing notions of life, as we know it.

Arts North West is seeking an Expression of Interest (EOI) to create our inaugural Arts North West Enable Arts Steering Committee.

The aim of the Arts North West Enable Arts Steering Committee is to provide strategic direction, consultation, and advice to Arts North West when designing and delivering projects and programs, determining priority areas and accessible and inclusive considerations to our service delivery and the organisation as a whole.    

If you wish to submit an Expression of Interest in joining the Arts North West Enable Arts Steering Committee, please complete the Expression of Interest form through the button below by 5.00pm 10 April 2023.

A $3000 travel bursary for music writers to attend international showcases and write about Australian artists.

$15,000 each to support both an Australian artist and a Thai artist to undertake reciprocal residencies.

Indigenous Contemporary Music
The Indigenous Contemporary Music program supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander musicians and bands. It provides opportunities and skills to develop ongoing income and employment pathways in the music industry.

NSW science engagement grants
Each year, Inspiring Australia NSW (Inspiring NSW) offers funding to NSW stakeholders to deliver high-profile community events during National Science Week and at other times of the year.

The Strengthening Rural Communities (SRC) Small & Vital stream gives small remote, rural and regional communities across Australia the opportunity to access funds for a broad range of initiatives that directly and clearly benefit local communities. Grants up to $10,000 are available for a broad range of grassroots, community-led initiatives that directly and clearly benefit local communities that strengthen local people, places and climate solutions, with a preference for smaller communities (populations under 15,000).

Strengthening Rural Communities – Prepare & Recover
The Strengthening Rural Communities (SRC) Prepare & Recover program supports communities in remote, rural and regional communities across Australia to implement initiatives that prevent and prepare for future climate related impacts, or recover from existing disasters in the medium to long-term timeframe, generally one to ten years after the disaster. Grants up to $25,000 are available for a broad range of initiatives to strengthen the capacity and capability of local people, organisations, networks, and systems that help communities to be informed, skilled, connected and resourced for the future.
