Arts North West Micro Grants are NOW OPEN! Up to $1,000 for independent professional practising artists and arts organisations across all art forms, can apply for funding to support your creative endeavour.

📌Round Five of this Funding Program opens on Wednesday 6 September 2023
📌Applications close on 11.59 pm Wednesday 18 October 2023
📌Successful recipients will be notified by Wednesday 25 October 2023
📌Projects can begin from Monday 30 October 2023, following the completion of agreement.

HICCUP - A Windmill Theatre Company Production by Jude Henshall and Ellen Steele

Arts North West ON TOUR proudly presents HICCUP - A Windmill Theatre Company Production by Jude Henshall and Ellen Steele. With six performances across four regional live theatre venues, HICCUP is part of Arts North West’s ON TOUR programming for 2023.

Hiccup is a hilarious rocking musical extravaganza about working together, finding friendship and how to, once and for all, stop the hiccups.

It’s a perfect, balmy night in the outback. A sleep-deprived camper, a cheeky quokka and an emu with a penchant for creating wild inventions, awake to discover that a koala has come down with a stubborn and ear-shatteringly loud case of the hiccups.

The three embark on an epic journey through the night that sees them frantically eat, sing and invent their way towards a cure before the sun comes up.

THE END OF WINTER - Siren Theatre Co and Critical Stages Production

Arts North West, Siren Theatre Co and Critical Stages are pleased to be bringing Noëlle Janaczewska's END OF WINTER to the New England North West.

A beautiful and poignant story that asks the question 'What is happening to winter?' In hot, bushfire-prone Australia our winters are becoming warmer and shorter. Will climate change eventually erase the season, leaving it to exist only in paintings, fairytales and historical accounts? The End of Winter is about loss and resilience. It’s about the places the writer goes in search of the cold weather she loves—places she can reach via public transport and the imagination.

'A LETTER TO MY RETURNING...'
IS LOOKING FOR PARTICIPANTS

‘A Letter to My Returning…’ is a creative recovery response project; aiming to work with flood-effected individuals, community groups and organisations who have been affected by the flood events of 2021/2022.

Through the power of letter writing, participants are encouraged to address a letter directly to the flood waters. Participants can order a Letter Writing Pack or can complete the fillable PDF online through the link below.

Letter writing opportunities close on 30 November 2023.

As part of a larger project Arts North West is looking to engage ten local artists from flood-affected communities to create artworks and creative documentation that reflect on the flood events that have affected the region. These artworks will draw inspiration from the letters, as well as the artists’ own experiences and interpretations of the flood events and their effects on homes, livelihoods, and the landscape.

Applications for artists close on 30 October 2023 and artworks are to be completed by 20 December 2023.

The letters and artworks will be curated as part of a touring exhibition with regional locations to be confirmed at a later date.

This project has been made possible by the Foundation for Rural Regional Renewal through FRRR.

Arts North West is seeking Expressions of Interest (EOI) to create our Arts North West Enable Arts Steering Committee. The aim of the Steering Committee is to provide direction and planning for potential projects and programs within our arts and disability programming. The committee will collaborate with Arts North West to identify priority areas for project and program planning, and to ensure Arts North West remains accessible and inclusive.

INAUGURAL CYRIL KNOX ART PRIZE

Entries are closing soon for the inaugural Cyril Knox Art Prize, a biennial award that recognises and celebrates the best Aboriginal artists in North West NSW. Whitehaven Coal has partnered with Narrabri Shire Council to deliver the first-ever Cyril Knox Art Prize exhibition at The Crossing Theatre in Narrabri beginning Saturday 23 September, with the theme for this year’s Prize being “For Our Elders”.

The winner will receive $5,000 with the community voting for the People’s Choice Award. The People’s Choice winner will receive $1,500. There will also be a junior prize of $500.

PLANNING ESSENTIALS

There are a lot of things to take into consideration when organising a tour, and making good choices about both the big picture decisions and the details gives you the best chance of a smooth and successful experience. Artists, artist managers and tour managers are invited to this third session of the special Sound Advice series focused on touring regional NSW. This session will feature Loren Ryan (Artist), Raechel Whitchurch (Senior Agent, Sure Thing Agency) and Tom Gordon (Head of Music, Mary’s), and cover best practice tour logistics, where to stay, travel routes, and how to structure your day while on the road. The session will be hosted by MusicNSW Coordinator for the Central West, Outback and West Darling regions, Sophie Jones.

Getting people to your shows is a critical part of touring success. So how can you use marketing to help, and how much do you need to spend? In this session, Cooper Parsons of Comes with Fries will walk you through what to consider when approaching tour marketing. Cooper has an extensive background in campaign management, streaming and marketing strategy. Hosting the session is MusicNSW’s Community & Digital Strategist Helen Henry.

10 September - Volunteer Museum Grant Program - Project Development Grants - 2023

Project Development Grants empower community museums and Aboriginal cultural spaces to carry out strategic and innovative projects with mid to long-term outcomes. The grants can also provide an opportunity to work productively with an appropriate consultant as a skill development opportunity.

10 September - Volunteer Museum Grant Program - Small Grants - 2023

This program’s Small Grants aim to meet the short-term, collection-based requirements of community museums and Aboriginal cultural spaces. There are no set categories for funding and applications for a broad range of projects will be considered.

As an example, previous Small Grants have funded the purchase of computer cataloguing software, exhibition mannequins and display cases, oral history recording equipment and archival storage items.

11 September 2023 - Visual Arts Fellowship (Emerging) 2023/24

This fellowship is delivered with the curatorial and exhibition support of Artspacelaunch. The objective is to support NSW visual arts practitioners in the early stages of their career to challenge and expand their practice. Up to 6 applicants will be shortlisted to take part in the 2023-24 fellowship exhibition at Artspace, Sydney in mid-2024. At the exhibition opening, the fellowship of $30,000 will be awarded to 1 successful emerging visual artist to undertake a self-directed professional development program. The self-directed program could include research, travel, studio residencies, creation of new work, mentorships and other activities that align with the recipient’s practice.

19 September 2023 - International Engagement Fund

This fund supports Australian artists and creative workers to undertake creative collaboration and development; cultural exchange and knowledge sharing; research, experimentation, scoping and prototyping activities; and reciprocal relationship-building activities such as residency exchanges, labs and peer exchange models. Activities can take place in-person, online, or in a combination of in-person and online (hybrid). International organisations working with Australian artists or creative workers are eligible to apply. Only one application can be made to this category per closing date. Funding amounts are available between $5,000 to $30,000.

It’s My Party … and I’ll Die if I Want To!

The next theatrical production from the North West Theatre Company is Australian playwright Elizabeth Coleman’s wonderful contemporary play, “It’s My Party … and I’ll Die if I Want To!”

When father Ron Patterson suddenly calls all of his family together for an evening of “Sausage rolls and Saladas”, what are the other members of this typical Australian family, to think? All of the family have reasons NOT to be there, but family duty and expectations bring them all together for a night of craziness, revelations, and twists and turns which will have the audience in stitches.

Opening night for the production, will be Saturday September 9th at the Roxy Theatre, Bingara at 7:30pm. A second evening performance will be on Saturday September 16th again at 7:30pm and there will be two matinee performances at 2:00pm on Sunday September 10th and Sunday September 17.

Get across the entire silver-working process with Richard as your guide, from cutting, soldering, heating, cold-connecting, fold-forming, bezel-setting and polishing. The cost includes enough sterling silver for one ring, pendant, brooch or pair of earrings; and a limited selection of raw materials and stones: vintage linoleum, copper, leather, moonstones, freshwater pearls, etc. Design and make something special!

The Meditative Doodle & Beyond

Doodling is generally considered a waste of time, of little value other than occupying one’s hand while listening to something boring.

In recent years doodling has had an upgrade and revival because of the acknowledged benefits of drawing mindfully. Without being ‘artistic’ you can draw your way into a relaxed state called The Flow, which is calm and alert without being sleepy. The Flow can be achieved many ways, it’s how we feel when totally absorbed in an activity and when you finish that activity you feel like you are returning refreshed.

There are a number of doodling schools that have sprung up, Zen Doodle and Zen Tangle for example. Their names reflect the meditative purpose of doodling.

With paper and pen Jan Clark will lead you into this pleasant way of drawing without stress or pressure to do something ‘real’. This is a process for you to enjoy.

If you like to make things that are useful, besides the pleasure of creating, Jan can show a number of ways to use your doodles.

In celebration of this milestone we take a look behind the bricks of the historic building that is Calrossy House. It is a story of change, resilience, friendship and success, told by the people who were there every step of the way, from the early days in 1923 when the then Tamworth Church of England Girls School relocated to the Brisbane Street Campus to the dual campus structure of today.

This wonderfully produced 45 minute documentary will take you on a journey. Calrossy… Our Light and Life offers untold insights, recollections, recounts and details from past Principals, Alumni and delves deep into the archives.

It is the true story of Calrossy’s diverse history, dedication to education excellence and the community through good and difficult times.

As part of this evening we are raising funds for the Calrossy Foundation - Scholarship Fund. In particular the Mary England (Melville 43) and Ruth Munro Scholarships that were established in 2019 as part of our School centenary in recognition of their outstanding contribution to our School.

The Gunnedah Shire Band has previously won the Australian Open, State and National Open A Grade titles and, on numerous occasions, has won the Ern Keller International Band of the Year. The Band includes players of outstanding ability who hold both national and international solo titles as well as outstanding young players.

The Tamworth RSL Brass Band is always striving to improve the skill and entertainment level of its performances in order to demonstrate the flexibility and nuances of the modern Brass Band. For this concert the Band has been fortunate to secure the help of some talented friends joining them on stage from other Brass Bands from the state. Some interesting performances are guaranteed!

The Busking Coordinator is responsible for: Organising busking activities throughout the Festival, Planning and coordinating the Australian Busking Championship.
