NEW CHAIR OF ARTS NORTH WEST

Arts North West has accepted the resignation of our longstanding Chair, Anna Watt. Anna has been the Chair of Arts North West for over six years and has been a compassionate, knowledgeable and strong guiding voice for the organisation. Her tenure has seen two Executive Directors, a global pandemic, and numerous floods, fires, droughts and plagues that have affected our regional communities. Throughout all of this, she has maintained absolute integrity and has continued to focus on on vision for a rich, diverse cultural landscape and expand on creative opportunities in the New England North West. We thank Anna for her dedication of commitment to the organisation and wish her all the best in her future endeavours.

Arts North West welcomes UNE Professor Alistair Noble, to the position of interim Chair of Arts North West in 2023. Alistair is a highly accomplished pianist, composer and musicologist and is currently the Head of School: Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences at the University of New England and has been on the Board of Arts North West for two years. We greatly appreciate Alistair’s industry insights, diplomacy, wisdom and analytical nature. We warmly welcome Alistair as the new Chair of the Board of Arts North West.

Arts North West would like to introduce our new Projects Officer, Jules Minors. Jules is coming to us from her previous role as Education Coordinator at Bank Art Museum Moree. Jules has been a vibrant, joyous and dynamic personality in Moree who is keen to see deliver projects throughout the New England North West.

2023 OUTBACK ARCHIES ART PRIZE WINNERS

Outback Arts hosted the opening of the Outback Archies 2023 Exhibition - 'Legends and Landscapes' on Saturday 16 September 2023. The exhibition features nearly 100 artworks from a diverse range of artists located across 17 Shires in regional NSW including the New England North West.

The judging panel included Kent Buchanan, Curator at Western Plains Cultural Centre, Isabelle Morgan Curator of Contemporary Art at Campbelltown Arts Centre, Catherine Goldsmith, Independent Visual Art Teacher and Artist.

✨Maree Kelly of Curlewis won the Major Outback Archies Prize for her work ‘Min Min Lights in the Pilliga’

✨Kylie Lamph of Tamworth received 1st for her Ceramics work ‘Opal Fields’

NOMINEES OF THE 2023 IMAGINE AWARDS
HAVE BEEN ANNOUNCED!

The IMAGinE Awards are an initiative of Museums & Galleries of NSW, developed with support from the Australian Museums and Galleries Association NSW and Regional and Public Galleries of NSW. The IMAGinE Awards offer a unique opportunity for museums, galleries and Aboriginal cultural spaces in NSW to advocate, promote their achievements and raise their profile within the sector and the broader community. Arts North West is pleased to see institutions from across the region be recognised for their high-quality and exemplary projects, programs and exhibitions and be acknowledged for their innovation and resilience.

The outcome of the Strategic Partnership Project by the Regional Arts Network as part of the Regional Futures Project ‘ Artists in Volatile Landscapes’ at the Casula Powerhouse has been nominated.

The other nominations from our region include NERAM’s exhibitions ‘STRONG’, ‘The Arts of Nature’ and their programming of the HOME project and Winter Blooming Festival. Tamworth Regional Gallery was nominated for the exhibition ‘Looking at Gold’ with the Casula Powerhouse, as well as the programming of ‘Trans Day of Visibility. The Tamworth Regional Film and Sound Archive were nominated for their Innovation and Resilience project ‘Relocation Rush’.

APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN!

Arts North West Micro Grants are OPEN! Up to $1,000 for independent professional practising artists and arts organisations across all art forms, can apply for funding to support your creative endeavour.

📌Successful recipients will be notified by Wednesday 25 October 2023
📌Projects can begin from Monday 30 October 2023, following the completion of agreement.

'A LETTER TO MY RETURNING...'
IS LOOKING FOR PARTICIPANTS

‘A Letter to My Returning…’ is a creative recovery response project; aiming to work with flood-effected individuals, community groups and organisations who have been affected by the flood events of 2021/2022.

Through the power of letter writing, participants are encouraged to address a letter directly to the flood waters. Participants can order a Letter Writing Pack or can complete the fillable PDF online through the link below.

Letter writing opportunities close on 30 November 2023.

As part of a larger project Arts North West has four artist opportunities remaining to work with artists to creatively respond to the flood events that have affected the region. Artists are asked to develop artworks responding to the letters submitted, as well as the artists’ own experiences and interpretations of the flood events and their effects on homes, livelihoods, and the landscape.

Applications for artists close on 30 October 2023 and artworks are to be completed by 20 December 2023.

The letters and artworks will be curated as part of a touring exhibition with regional locations to be confirmed at a later date.

This project has been made possible by the Foundation for Rural Regional Renewal through FRRR.

GATHER AND TRADE + MOREE BLAK MARKETS

Arts North West is partnering with Blak Markets to be part of their market event in Moree at Jellicoe Park on Sunday 29 October 2023.We are calling for First Nations artists, craftspeople, and cultural artisans from the New England North West to register for a market stall and be part of this nationally acclaimed event.

TAMWORTH PRIDE’S FAIR DAY
THIS WEEKEND!

Arts North West will be attending Tamworth Pride Inc’s 3rd Annual Fair Day from 10.00 am - 2.00 pm Saturday, 23 September 2023 at Bicentennial Park, Kable Ave, Tamworth.

On the day the ANW team will be extending the yarn-bombing project and creating pop-up installation. We will also be providing attendees with arts information and resources.

This is a ✨FREE✨ event with everyone welcome so come along and celebrate our local LGTBQIA+ community for a colourful day of inclusion, diversity and yarnbombing!

BODY OF WORK EXHIBITION
HEADING TO WEE WAA
6 October - 4 November 2023

A stunning collection of 14 Mannequins reimagined by talented artists from around the New England North West, showcasing a vast array of mediums and arts practices will be opening at the Wee Waa Community Arts and Cultural Centre in early October!

Opening night of the exhibition will be from 6pm, Friday 6 October, 2023.

The exhibition features the mannequins & works of:

CURRENT GRANT FUNDING

10 October - Playing Australia Project Investment

Playing Australia Project Investment supports performing arts tours to reach regional and remote communities across Australia. The program supports net touring costs and other designated costs associated with tours. There is no limit on the amount that can be requested. The next round closes Tuesday 10 October 2023, 3pm AEDT for projects starting after 1 January 2024. There are two other rounds open for projects starting in 2024.

10 October - Helsinki International Artist Programme (HIAP)

The Helsinki International Artist Programme is the largest international residency centre in the Nordic and Baltic region. Every year up to 40 artists and arts professionals residing in Finland and abroad are offered a working period at HIAP. With $12,500 in funding, this three-month residency program offers time and space for open-ended research and experimentation, without the requirement to produce finalised work. The HIAP residency venues are located on Suomenlinna island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located a 15-minute ferry ride away from the centre of Helsinki, and in the Cable Factory cultural complex in Helsinki.

10 October 2023 - (re)situate Biennale Delegates Program

The program will facilitate exchange of ideas, catalyse new perspectives, and support the seeding of future projects and collaborations. Participants will connect with artists, producers and curators from Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art (face-to-face), Yokohama Triennale (online), and Venice Biennale (face-to-face).

12 October 2023 - Australian Heritage Grants

The Australian Heritage Grants program is the Australian Government’s flagship heritage-funding program. It provides ongoing support to protect and promote National Heritage-listed places. National Heritage-listed places that have been recognised for their natural, Indigenous or historic heritage values are eligible to apply.
