GATHER AND TRADE - ABORIGINAL ARTISANS MICRO MARKETS 2023

Arts North West, Glen Innes Local Aboriginal Land Council, and Quindalup - Aboriginal Art & Cultural Practices collaborated to host the first 2023 Gather and Trade Aboriginal Artisans Micro Markets in Glen Innes on May 6. The event showcased an impressive selection of artworks from various talented local creatives and was a great opportunity for local Aboriginal creatives to sell their art and products and reach a wide audience to promote their goods and practices.

The next Gather & Trade market is at Wallabadahfrom 10.00am - 2.00pm Sunday 28 May, 2023 at the Art Shack @ Wilgabah, 107 Baldocks Rd, Wallabadah NSW 2343.

SKYWHALE - SKYWHALES: EVERY HEART SINGS

On May 6, Arts North West and Tamworth Art Academy partnered with Tamworth Regional Gallery and Tamworth Regional Council to host a Plein Air workshop at Tamworth’s No.1 Oval as part of the launch of SKYWHALES: EVERY HEART SINGS by Patricia Piccinini. The event showcased the beauty of the Skywhales and brought together the community in a cultural celebration.

Local artists Sophie Honess, Danny Stanley, and our ED Lauren Mackley encouraged the public to apply drawing skills to capture the dynamic movement of the Skywhales from inflation to flight.

ANW engaged with patrons to gather feedback and survey responses regarding public arts and arts and cultural programming in Tamworth Regional Council.

The event bought over 3000 people to be part of the surreal experience to witness the Skywhales' majestic flight at sunrise. Thank you to Tamworth Regional Council and Tamworth Regional Gallery for this amazing experience.

FELTING HANDS ON THE MOREE PLAINS

This week, Stage one of our ‘Felting Hands on the Moree Plains’ workshops kicks off in Mungindi and Boomi. Arts North West, RAMHP and Moree Plains Shire Council are collaborating to bring wet-felt hat-making workshops with Joanne Barr to boost resilience in regional and remote communities.

The workshops are planned to take place at the Mungindi Hall from 9.00am on Thursday, May 18, 2023 and at the Boomi Hall from 9.00am Friday, May 19, 2023. Participants learn various felting techniques while fostering connections, conversations and opportunities for mental health check-ins with staff from Rural Adversity Mental Health Program. All the hats made will be photographed and showcased on the ANW website.

Stage two is planned for Pallamallawa Hall on Wednesday 7 June, 2023 and Garah Hall on Tuesday 6 June, 2023. Follow the links below to secure your spot in the workshop. Registrations are essential to ensure materials and catering.

Here Now & Always

'Here Now & Always' is an initiative by the Aboriginal Regional Arts Alliance that aims to celebrate and showcase Aboriginal arts and culture from New South Wales on a global scale. This annual program includes an online festival program and art market, providing a digital platform where presenters, artists, and audiences can unite in their appreciation of Aboriginal art and culture. The initiative not only fosters education but also cultivates meaningful partnerships. It serves as a profound reminder and renewal of connection between Aboriginal artistry and Country, where tradition intertwines with innovation. 'Here Now and Always' is dedicated to nurturing emerging artists while paying homage to those who have come before, acknowledging the enduring legacy of generations of Aboriginal people whose culture and spirit form the bedrock of this initiative.

Arts North West, Northern Inland Community College, community organisations and local government bodies are working together to increase opportunities for artists to teach their practice in our regions and opportunities for communities to gain access to workshops and classes.
Artists who are willing and interested to share their knowledge and host workshops are invited to complete the Expressions of Interest form below. We ask that one submission is completed per workshop topic.  You can make numerous submissions if you deliver more than one workshop topic.

ANW ENABLE ARTS STEERING COMMITTEE EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST

Arts North West is seeking an Expression of Interest (EOI) to create our inaugural Arts North West Enable Arts Steering Committee. The aim of the Arts North West Enable Arts Steering Committee is to provide strategic direction, consultation, and advice to Arts North West when designing and delivering projects and programs, determining priority areas and accessible and inclusive considerations to our service delivery and the organisation as a whole.

NEW EXHIBITION SPOTLIGHT

Tamworth’s Weswal Gallery has announced the opening of two new exhibitions in the gallery, featuring the work of talented local artists.

In the Main Gallery, from 17 May until 4 June 2023, Anna Henderson's “Chasing Shadows”, which explores the concept of pursuing something elusive through enigmatic mixed media artworks and ceramics. Henderson, based in Guyra, was recently awarded Grand Champion in the Deepwater Art Prize.

In the Stockroom Gallery, also from 17 May until 4 June 2023, “This Must Be the Place” is an exhibition by an emerging artist Janna Hayes who based is in the Northern Tablelands of NSW. Hayes' large, expressive landscapes and abstract pieces are inspired by the landscapes of Cathedral Rock National Park, where she has found a sense of belonging since moving to the region in 2018. Hayes was awarded the Major Art Prize at the 2023 Bendemeer Art Show.

Destination NSW – Nature-Based Visitor Experience Development Grants
This program aims to support the development of new and enhanced nature-based tourism attractions and experiences in regional NSW. Grants between $100,000 and $250,000 (excluding GST) are available on a dollar-for-dollar matched funding basis. Will consider outperforming arcDUG status. Projects can be of a much greater value; however, all additional costs will need to be covered by the applicant.

Arts and Cultural Assets Program (ECAP Arts)
Recovery package for flood damaged arts and cultural infrastructure, delivered under the 2022 Community Local Infrastructure Recovery Package (CLIRP). Arts and cultural organisations, Local Councils and Regional Arts Development Organisations (RADOs) in areas impacted by the 2022 severe flood events* can now apply for funding to support the restoration, replacement and betterment of arts and cultural infrastructure that was damaged by flooding February and June 2022.

Strengthening Rural Communities — Small & Vital
The Strengthening Rural Communities (SRC) Small & Vital stream gives small remote, rural and regional communities across Australia the opportunity to access funds for a broad range of initiatives that directly and clearly benefit local communities.Grants up to $10,000 are available for a broad range of grassroots, community-led initiatives that directly and clearly benefit local communities that strengthen local people, places and climate solutions, with a preference for smaller communities (populations under 15,000).

Strengthening Rural Communities – Prepare & Recover
The Strengthening Rural Communities (SRC) Prepare & Recover program supports communities in remote, rural and regional communities across Australia to implement initiatives that prevent and prepare for future climate related impacts, or recover from existing disasters in the medium to long-term timeframe, generally one to ten years after the disaster. Grants up to $25,000 are available for a broad range of initiatives to strengthen the capacity and capability of local people, organisations, networks, and systems that help communities to be informed, skilled, connected and resourced for the future.

The Damien Greer Lawyers Community Grant program
The Damien Greer Lawyers Community Grant program recognises and celebrates organisations that strive to make a positive impact within their local community. If your organisation is eligible, you can apply for a Community Grant of $2,500. There are 2 grants available in the second round, ending June 30, 2023.

Hazelhurst Art on Paper Award
The biennial Hazelhurst Art on Paper Award is a significant national exhibition that aims to elevate the status of work on paper while supporting and promoting artists working with this medium. With awards totalling $26,000 the biennial Hazelhurst Art on Paper Award showcases outstanding art created with, on or about paper. Awards include the $15,000 major award, the $5,000 Young and Early Career Artist Award, the $5,000 Friends of Hazelhurst Local Artist Award, and the $1,000 People's Choice Award.

Destination NSW – NSW State Significant Event Fund
This program aims to enable accelerated investment to secure, acquire and develop signature sporting and cultural events of national and international significance. Its purpose is to aid the recovery of the events industry post COVID-19.
